Potential mutagenic activity of boronic acids

Boronic acids are well-known compounds in the pharmaceutical industry: they are one of the most widespread and ubiquitous intermediates in organic and medicinal synthetic chemistry. Up to very recently, boronic acids had always been reported as safe, but recent data have raised alarming concerns about their potential mutagenic activity. There is now pressure building up on authorities to assess boron as an official PGI compound (Potential Genotoxic Compound), which would have a considerable impact on the pharmaceutical industry.

SiliCycle produces and commercializes silica-based heterogeneous scavengers extremely effective in the removal of boronic acids.
