How can the column performance be checked?

> back to HPLC FAQ

The column performance can be checked, when the column is received, by running the separation shown on the enclosed Certificate of Analysis. The exact test conditions (Mobile phase/Temperature/Flow rate/Analytes) should always appear on the CoA along with the column performance results (expressed in Plates/column or plates/m) along with peak symmetry or Tailing Factor (Tf) for each peak.

Please note that in order to achieve the results shown on these CoAs, it is mandatory to optimize your HPLC system performance by reducing extra column effects, like dead volumes, by using small id tubing after the injector all the way to the detector and preferably a small volume flow cell. Column manufacturers usually use extremely performant systems to evaluate their column performances.
