Synthesis of a Library of Linear Bottlebrush Diblock Copolymers by Ruthenium Catalyzed ROMP

Block copolymers self-assemble into 3D networks that can incorporate orthogonal properties into the material. The introduction of a bottlebrush architecture, namely a linear backbone with densely grafted side chains, provides asymmetry to the macromolecules. Bates and Lodge’s research groups studied the phase behavior of linear-bottlebrush block polymers by creating a library of over 250 linear-bottlebrush diblock copolymers, divided into 8 families of copolymers. Degree of polymerization (N) and volume fraction of the linear block (flin) were varied within the families.
The polymers were synthesized by ring opening metathesis polymerization (ROMP) using the 3rd generation Grubb’s catalyst. The remaining and contaminating Ru catalyst was scavenged using SiliaMetS DMT.
This study demonstrated that the architectural asymmetry of the copolymers controls the compositions and formations of the networks which provide mechanical properties to the polymers.

SiliaMetS DMT (Dimercaptotriazine) (R79030B)
SiliaMetS DMT is the silica - bound equivalent of 2,4,6 - trimercaptotriazine (trithiocyanuric acid, TMT). It is a versatile metal scavenger for a variety of metals and the preferred metal scavenger for ruthenium catalysts and hindered Pd complexes. Best scavenger for: As, Ir, Ni, Os, Pd, Pt, Rh, Ru & Se. Good scavenger for: Cd, Co, Cu, Fe, Sc & Zn.
